Trustee Voting Areas

At the December 10, 2019 Board Meeting the Board began exploring the possibility of transitioning from at-large to by-trustee area Board elections, where each Board member must reside within the designated trustee area boundary and is elected only by the voters in that trustee area.

Under the California Voting Rights Act (CVRA), by-trustee area elections are strongly preferred, at-large elections are impermissible if they result in racially polarized voting.

While the District does not believe that its current form of elections violates the CVRA, it does believe that it is in the public interest to begin the process to transition from at-large to trustee-area elections to minimize the potential for impermissible racially-polarized voting.

The Board provided information to the public about trustee voting areas at its meeting on December 10, 2019, and will provide additional information at a Board meeting on January 13, 2020. Additionally, four pubic hearings will be held to allow public input and comment on trustee area voting. The Board of Education welcomes your input as it considers the transition to Trustee Voting Areas. Please see the schedule of meetings on the sidebar.
